Ralph Waldo Emerson stated, “The things taught in schools and colleges are not an education, but the means to an education”. I wholeheartedly agree with his statement. This is why many have become disillusioned with higher education. Many attend looking for concrete, knowledge-based, guaranteed solutions for career success when there really are none. Society has moved beyond the simplicity of the Industrial Age, through the Information Age, and into the Experience Age; but educational institutions have not changed much beyond surface advances in functioning technology. A stronger shift is needed. Acquisition of knowledge should not be the goal, but rather the guide or tool used for deeper development and discovery. All students need to not only understand the facts presented in books and lectures, but the questions they need to ask based on the information they learn. As an educator, my aim is not to create information experts, but to inspire creative and critical thinkers and leaders. I desire to teach students to use information and research to test and develop theories and open new doors. My mantra is to lead by example. I challenge myself daily to find interesting and unique ways to engage various types of learners and present them with realistic scenarios and examples of successes and failures in industry. Film and theatre are very subjective disciplines. There is room for experimentation, disagreement and discussion of methods and norms. Finally, as an educator, I am dedicated to being a lifelong learner. It is imperative that I stay engaged in educational and discipline based professional development. If I become stagnant in my learning, I stop the flow of a healthy exchange of ideas that should be as meaningful and insightful for me as it is for my students.
